OREANDA-NEWS. The European Consumer Organization, which unites specialized associations in the EU countries, has filed a complaint with the European Commission against the popular social network TikTok, accusing it of violating the rights of users. This is stated in the press release of this organization, published on Tuesday, February 16.

The organization noted, that in just a few years, TikTok has become one of the most popular social networks, primarily among children. At the same time, according to it, the social network does not provide adequate protection for young users from dangerous content, and TikTok is misleading on some issues.

«Based on the results of a new study, the European Consumer Organization points to numerous violations of consumer rights in the EU, as well as the lack of protection of children from hidden advertising and unacceptable content», the document says.

In addition, consumer advocates point to unfair copyright policies for the videos they record. According to them, TikTok receives the unconditional right to use and distribute such videos without any remuneration for the author. The organization is concerned about the lack of clear information about what personal data of users is collected and how it is used in the future.

In June last year, the European Data Protection Committee announced it's intention to check the popular TikTok, for which a working group was created. This decision was made after receiving a request from a member of the European Parliament, who was concerned about the collection of personal data of Europeans by this social network. In addition, the committee was going to examine whether facial recognition systems comply with the EU personal data protection regulations. The results of this work have not yet been reported.
