OREANDA-NEWS. Floods in the western part of Germany claimed the lives of three Russian citizens who constantly lived in Germany. This was announced by the Russian ambassador to Berlin Sergei Nechaev in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

“Alas, but the tragedy did not bypass our citizens: according to the latest information got from local law enforcement agencies, as a result of a great natural disaster, three Russians who constantly lived in the FRG were killed. They were just carried in a stream, and no one could do anything to help them, "he said.

"We express our deep condolences and words of support to their families, relatives and friends. The embassy and Russian consular missions continue to closely monitor the situation," the diplomat added.

The ambassador noted that the consequences of the rampant elements that hit the western lands of Germany are unprecedented, and according to experts, the restoration of the destroyed infrastructure "will require a lot of time and multibillion-dollar costs."

In mid-July, heavy rains fell in western and southwestern Germany, causing devastating flooding. Because of the rains, the tributaries of the Rhine Ahr and Moselle, as well as the small rivers Sauer, Prüm, Niems, Kiel and Erft, flooded the banks. The total death toll in all settlements affected by the disaster exceeded 180 people, more than 750 people were injured.

This summer, Western Europe experienced its largest flood in 20 years. In addition to Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands were also affected. Earlier it was reported that flood damage in Germany was estimated at billions of euros.
