The Viareggio Carnival will Return in 2021 after being Canceled due to the Pandemic
OREANDA-NEWS. One of the most popular carnivals in Italy will take place on the Viareggio embankment on September 18, 26 and October 2,3, 9 after a long break due to coronavirus restrictions. The coronavirus pandemic has become one of the central themes of the festival, including climate change and social injustice in the United States.
The festival has a long history of almost 150 years. It was first held in 1873, to ridicule the nobles of the city of Lucca, which was located near Viareggio. Now the carnival is a demonstration of self-made floats that satirically ridicule modern social problems.
The production of exhibits takes many months of work. Dozens of people are trying to work on papier-mache floats: they draw, form and create each part of the future figure separately. All efforts are aimed at winning. Huge satirical floats will compete with each other. The winner will be announced on the last day of the festival.
The guests of the carnival were already presented with a ghostly Black Statue of Liberty, chained in chains, which reflects the social injustice in the United States, and the indigenous people of the Amazon fighting deforestation - an allegory for climate problems in our world.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, only 5,000 people will be able to enjoy the carnival.
