OREANDA-NEWS The British Royal Covent Garden Theater will present an opera about the last days of the life of musician and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. This is reported by The Guardian. The production The Last Days will be based on the plot of the 2005 film of the same name directed by Gus Van Sant.

The movie tells about a musician named Blake, very similar in appearance to the cult rock musician. He suffers from depression and trying to avoid communication with friends and family, locks himself in an old country house. Gus Van Sant specifically used a fictitious name for the main character, since Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, did not allow him to make a biographical film.

«The production will plunge into the torments of [the musician], who created a modern myth about him», representatives of the Royal Theater said. According to the plot, the main character recently returned home after rehabilitation, «but he is haunted by objects, guests and memories that distract him from his true goal — self-destruction». The premiere of the opera at the theater in London is scheduled for October this year.

Directors Matt Copson and Anna Morrissey worked on the theatrical adaptation of the plot of The Last Days. The author of the music for the libretto is Covent Garden composer Oliver Leith. According to him, Cobain's songs were among the first he learned to play guitar while still a teenager, and he hopes that the opera will appeal not only to Nirvana fans, but also to a wide audience.
