OREANDA-NEWS. According to the European Commission, 70 percent of all adults in the EU have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. More than 258 million Europeans thus received the maximum possible protection from the coronavirus, the Brussels office reported on Tuesday, August 31.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stressed the need for early vaccination of Europeans who have not yet been vaccinated, as well as citizens of other countries of the world. «We will continue to support our partners in this», she assured, recalling that the pandemic is not over yet. Von der Leyen also said that since December 2020, the European Union has exported 700 million doses of coronavirus vaccine to 130 countries around the world. In addition, the EU is one of the largest donors to the COVAX initiative, she pointed out and stated the need to make even more efforts in this regard.

On the eve of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it expects a sharp increase in the number of deaths in Europe and Central Asian countries from the effects of coronavirus infection in the coming months. By the beginning of December, another 236 thousand people may die from covid in 53 countries of this region, said WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge. He recalled that 1.3 million people have died from COVID-19 in Europe and Central Asia so far, and 64 million cases of coronavirus infection have been registered in the region since the beginning of the pandemic.

At the same time, infection rates in 33 countries of the region have recently increased by ten percent or more, which is explained by the widespread spread of the more contagious «delta» variant of the coronavirus, the abolition of anti-coronavirus restrictions and the growth of tourism. The Regional Director called for increasing the pace of vaccination, noting that in less prosperous countries of the region, only six percent of the population is fully vaccinated against coronavirus.
