OREANDA-NEWS. Scientists from the University of Liverpool conducted a research to establish a link between the level of alcohol consumption and the profession. The results of the scientific work are presented in the journal «BMC Public health». Experts analyzed the data of participants in the largest medical research «UK Biobank», which studied the impact of various factors on the development of diseases. The researchers selected the questionnaires of more than 100 thousand people aged 40 to 69 years, included in the «UK Biobank» database in the period from 2006 to 2010.

To drinkers, scientists attributed those who consumed more than 50 (for men) and 35 (for women) conventional units of alcohol per week. 10 milliliters, or 8 grams of pure alcohol, were taken as a unit. A glass of wine and a bottle of beer can contain from one to three conventional units.

Among men, the highest rates of alcohol consumption were observed in construction and industrial workers, as well as cleaners. Priests, medical practitioners, physicists, meteorologists, and geologists drink the least. Among women, the leaders in alcohol addiction were senior and middle managers, and the least likely to drink were doctors, scientists and school teachers.
