OREANDA-NEWS The American cargo spacecraft Cygnus detached from the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday, June 28, after four months of being a part of it, NASA reports.

The mechanical manipulator Canadarm2 took the "truck" away from the docking port of the Unity module which is situated on the American segment of the station.

The cargo spacecraft of the Northrop Grumman Corporation arrived at the ISS on February 21. Cygnus delivered about 3.7 tons of cargo to the ISS, including food, as well as equipment and materials for dozens of scientific studies.

It is planned that on June 29 the device will burn up in the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere after deorbiting. The "truck" took garbage and waste from the ISS with it.

The spacecraft's launch was carried out with the help of an Antares launch system from NASA's Wallops Spaceport in February. It is located on the island with the same name off the Atlantic coast of the US state of Virginia.

The launch was part of a NASA commercial contract with Northrop Grumman Corporation, which owns the launch vehicle and the automated cargo spacecraft.

This was the 17th flight of the Northrop Grumman cargo spacecraft to the ISS. There was also one launch failure in 2014, when the craft failed to make it to the station due to an Antares launch vehicle failure. The first successful launch of Cygnus took place on September 18, 2013.
