Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Joins Alphabet Board of Directors
"I am pleased to welcome Francis Arnold to the Alphabet board of directors. Francis has extensive experience in research and work in areas such as chemistry, engineering, renewable energy and others, as well as the Nobel Prize in chemistry. I look forward to working with her!" - noted Pichai.
Arnold has developed a methodology for the directed evolution of enzymes, forcing the cell to produce new, previously non-existent enzymes, on the basis of which it is possible to create new drugs, types of environmentally friendly biofuels. In 2018, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in conjunction with George Smith and Greg Winter.
The discoveries for which the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded in the future can help prolong a person’s life and make him more resistant to diseases, says Stepan Kalmykov, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at Moscow State University.
