OREANDA-NEWS. The risk of death from coronavirus in an intensely smoking person is 90% higher than in people without a bad habit, said Sergey Avdeev, head of the Department of Pulmonology at Sechenov University, chief freelance pulmonologist of the Ministry of Health of Russia.

According to him, the longer the smoking experience, the more often patients are transferred to the intensive care unit. «We see that heavy smokers have a 90% higher risk of death than non-smokers. Moreover, at present, all the data obtained, which we can call more evidence-based medicine, suggests that, unfortunately, the smoking factor is a factor of an unfavorable prognosis in COVID-19», he said during the National Congress «Man and Medicine».

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 132 million people worldwide have been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and almost 2.9 million have died. About 107 million patients have recovered. DW follows the events of April 6.
