OREANDA-NEWS. Russia invites all countries to join joint international projects to combat climate change, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the climate summit on Thursday.

Putin said: “In this regard, it would be very important to establish broad and effective international cooperation on the calculation and monitoring of emissions of all types of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. We invite all interested countries to join joint scientific research, jointly invest in practically significant climate projects and become more active in development of low-carbon technologies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change. "

The President said that the situation with global warming did not arise yesterday, it is necessary to take into account not only new volumes of greenhouse gas emissions, but also other factors.

He noted that "the situation that stimulated global warming and the problems associated with it did not arise yesterday. How do we see the ways of a comprehensive solution to these problems? First, carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for hundreds of years, so it is not enough to just talk about new volumes of emissions. It is important to deal with the absorption of carbon dioxide accumulated in the atmosphere».

Putin pointed out that "Russia makes, without exaggeration, a colossal contribution to the absorption of global emissions, both its own and those of others, due to the absorbing capacity of our ecosystems, which is estimated at 2.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year."

The President of the Russian Federation added that "it would be very important to establish broad and effective international cooperation in the calculation and monitoring of emissions of all types of harmful emissions into the atmosphere."
