OREANDA-NEWS. Resident of Argentina was able to recover from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) without medical intervention. This is the second case in the history of mankind. This is reported by the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

In 2013, a resident of the Argentine city of Esperanza was diagnosed with HIV. In 2017, an international team of researchers began studying the patient's DNA in search of traces of the virus. Three years later, scientists tested her placenta after the birth of the child. It turned out that the woman does not have HIV. She is now expecting her second child.

The first person to be cured of HIV naturally was Lorin Wilenburg from the USA. Her case belongs to the «elite controllers» — people with a stable immune response, actively fighting against HIV. In total, four patients have been cured of the disease in history, but two of them recovered after stem cell transplantation.
