OREANDA-NEWS  For the first time in the world, cardiac surgeons at the Meshalkin National Medical Research Center performed a complex heart operation through a small incision. This information is reported in the press service of the institution.

It is noted that this was the world's first experience of single-stage prosthetics of the aortic valve of the heart, the ascending part and the aortic arch through a mini-access measuring six centimeters in the intercostal space.

The patient was a 65-year-old man with severe aortic heart disease on the background of valve calcification (deposition of calcium salts) and with a twofold expansion of the vessel wall. During the operation, doctors replaced the altered part of the aorta and the affected valve with a synthetic prosthesis.

The medical center noted that usually this kind of surgical intervention is performed through the incision of the sternum by 18-20 centimeters. By avoiding this, the risk of infectious complications of the wound is minimized, and the complete rehabilitation of a person occurs much faster - in 10-14 days.
