OREANDA-NEWS. April 29, 2016. The New York Times and Google are teaming up once again to provide select subscribers with Google Cardboard headsets. The newspaper said Thursday it will provide 300,000 of the VR headsets to its "most loyal" digital-only subscribers, which the company determined based on the duration of their subscriptions.

This isn't the first time the Times has teamed up with Google. The two companies ran a similar promotion in November 2015, which saw one million Google Cardboard viewers sent out to home delivery subscribers. The headset is a cheap and simple way to experience virtual realty with a smartphone.

The Cardboard viewers will arrive in conjunction with the release of a stereoscopic virtual-reality film that the Times created with the Lunar and Planetary Institute and the Universities Space Research Association. The film, titled "Seeking Pluto's Frigid Heart," will bring viewers on a journey to Pluto. It is set to be released on May 19 on YouTube and in the NYT VR app for Android and iOS.
