OREANDA-NEWS. August 29, 2008. A delegation of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK), led by Heikki Reponen, visited Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant and the construction site of Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant-2

Reponen said that they came to meet with their Russian partners and to sum up the results of their joint projects in Jan-June 2008, to specify their joint actions for Aug-Dec 2008 and to outline plans for 2009.

The guests started their visit with the construction site of Leningrad NPP-2. Reponen said that they were interested in the safety of the project and wanted to compare NPP construction processes in Russia and Finland and to exchange experience.

But there was one more reason.

Presently, Finland is building its fifth nuclear reactor and is planning to build one or two more. So, the Finns are familiarizing themselves with potential reactors for their future projects and it may so happen that they will opt for the reactors of Leningrad NPP-2. “So, we are simply obliged to familiarize ourselves with the safety systems of this type of reactor,” Reponen said.

Reponen pointed that there was difference between the conditions of the constructions of Olkiluoto-3 and LNPP-2.

In Finland they lay foundations on rock while the constructors of Leningrad NPP-2 are laying the foundations on clay. Reponen said that the construction of LNPP-2 was dynamic and well organized.

To remind, presently AREVA and Siemens are building in Finland Oliluoto-3 unit with ERP-1600 reactor.
