OREANDA-NEWS. October 17, 2008. The Energy Committee of State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation has held a roundtable on measures to improve the normative legal regulation of the implementation of the federal target program of measures to ensure nuclear and radiation safety in 2008–2015.

The chairman of the State Duma Energy Committee Y.Lipatov, the vice chairman of the committee K.Zaytsev, the first vice chairman of the Committee on Natural Monopolies of the Federal Council V.Mezhevich, representatives of the executive authorities, experts of the leading research institutes, manager of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation.

The key topic of the roundtable was the improvement of the legislation in the field of nuclear and radiation safety.

The federal target program of measures to ensure nuclear and radiation safety in 2008–2015 is aimed at solving the key problems in the field, particularly, by establishing a number of facilities for treatment of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste and feasibility studies of projects to ensure final isolation of highly radioactive waste.

The program has already been launched. However, the political and social-economic development of the country necessitates improvement of legal relations in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The participants in the roundtable pointed out that the adoption of the draft law on treatment of radioactive waste would be the first step towards the formation of a single state systems for treatment of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and will lay a firm legislative basis for the implementation of the strategic tasks of the nuclear industry.
