OREANDA-NEWS  On 28 October was announced, that representatives of independent, international consultancy Fichtner GmbH KG visited Interpipe Steel to carry out an ecological and social audit. The audit examined the impact of the construction of Interpipe Steel’s electro steel-smelting complex. The auditors were satisfied that the construction of the complex will not have a harmful environmental impact.

The construction of the electro steel-smelting complex will be accompanied from the start by a new management plan of social and ecological support. The plan supports measures to reduce the complex’s impact on the ecological and social environment. There will also be monthly monitoring of air quality and noise-levels.

Air quality monitoring is provided by the State-accredited laboratory of Dnepropetrovsk, part of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The monitoring of noise-levels is conducted by the State operating electromagnetic fields laboratory at the scientific research center in Dnepropetrovsk, also part of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Gennadij Esaulov, Director at Interpipe Steel said:

“Preserving the environment and observing ecological standards are major priorities for Interpipe and the future construction of its electro steel-smelting complex. This complex will be the first in Ukraine to adhere to international standards of ecological protection.”
 
Interpipe Steel will be the first metallurgical works to be built in Ukraine since the country gained its independence in 1991. Investment in the project will reach more than USD  600 million USD. Danieli of Italy was chosen as the general contractor for the mill. Once operational, it is foreseen that the mill will produce 1.32 million. tons of steel per year.
