OREANDA-NEWS. February 12, 2009. In January 2009, the port of Liepaja handled 249,800 tonnes of cargo (-40.2%, year-on-year), the port informs according to RZD-Partner. In the reported period, transshipment of dry loose cargo fell by 38.5% to 118,600 tonnes including 97,700 tonnes of grain (-28.2%).

In January, transshipment of general cargo totaled 111,900 tonnes (-9.6%), including 42,200 tonnes of timber (-38.8%) and 40,700 tonnes of ferrous metal (-15.5%).

In the reported period the port handled 19,300 tonnes of crude and oil products (-81%).

The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries mainly Byelorussia. In 2008, the port of Liepaja handled 4.19 million tonnes of cargo.
