OREANDA-NEWS. April 8, 2009. The expert committee on the ecological situation in NPP zones of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhandzor) has recognized that in 2008 the nuclear power plants of Russia were ecologically safe.

The findings of the committee were publicized during a meeting concerning the ecological activities of the Russian nuclear power plants in 2008 and their tasks for 2009.

Such meetings are conducted each year by the heads of the ecological services of the Russian NPPs and managers of Energoatom Concern OJSC. Representatives of Rostekhnadzor were also there. 

The head of the Environment Protection Department of the Central Office of Energoatom Concern Tatiana Palitskaya said that no single ecological incident was registered at the Russian NPPs in 2008. The plants’ work to protect environment was consistent and effective.

The key tasks of the ecological services of Energoatom Concern for 2009–2010 are to obtain Rostekhnadzor’s radioactive waste treatment license and to create an efficiency ecological management system complying with ISO 14001 standards.

The head of the Radiation Safety, Environment Protection and Nuclear Materials Control Department of Energoatom Concern Andrey Pechkurov said that the two key tasks were to enhance the efficiency of the efficiency of industrial ecological control and to reduce the negative impact of the NPPs on the environment.
