OREANDA-NEWS. September 04, 2009. The Swedish guests were interested in Russia’s experience in improving the safety of RBMK reactors.

The experts of the Training Center and the young personnel of Leningrad NPP discussed with their Swedish colleagues a number of questions concerning radiation safety, extension of service life, maintenance, treatment of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, personnel training, other promising projects.

“Russia and Sweden, just like other countries, seek improvement in the field of safety. In the last 15 years the Russian nuclear power plants have made drastic changes in both technology and organization of work. The safety requirements have been strongly toughened and, today, some Russian standards are even tougher than their European analogues. Many of the systems -  safety, emergency cooling, emergency supply, simulators — have been seriously upgraded,” Deputy Chief Engineer for Personnel Training of Leningrad NPP Sergey Yezhov.

The guests visited the plant’s control panel simulator and virtual reloader simulator. They pointed out the uniqueness and the high efficiency of the systems.

The visit was organized by Atomprof Non-Governmental Educational Institution for Continuing Professional Education and was part of the program to organize tours of Russian NPPs for young members of the Swedish Nuclear Society. The next plant the Swedish colleagues are planning to visit is Chernobyl NPP.
