OREANDA-NEWS. July 01, 2010. A meeting of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s High-Level Group was held in Paris. During the meeting, attended by representatives of 12 NEA member-states, Evgeny Evstratov, Deputy Director General of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, reported on the status of the presidential project to produce medical-grade molybdenum-99 currently under implementation by Rosatom as part of the efforts to overcome the consequences of a crisis in production of this isotope. A keen interest in the report was shown by those present.

Representatives of the national operator V/O Isotop took part in the meeting and in the discussion of the agenda.

The project is in its active phase now. By the end of the year, Rosatom’s Director General Sergey Kirienko said at the 2nd Atomexpo-2010 International Forum, the State Corporation would have the capacity to produce over 1000 Ci of molybdenum per week at the NIIAR site in Ulyanovsk Region for domestic and international markets. Three NIIAR research reactors are involved in the production of molybdenum. Part of the project is a contract with the German company ITD, a leading maker of special-purpose radiochemical equipment and the supplier of equipment for the project’s initial phase.
