OREANDA-NEWS. July 15, 2010. Russia and Algeria are ready to extend cooperation in the electric power industry. This intention was expressed at the fourth meeting of the Russian-Algerian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.

The Russian delegation was headed by Chairman of the Intergovernmental Commission, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Sergey Shmatko, the Algerian delegation – by Minister of Finance Karim Dzhudi. The parties spoke in favour of stimulation of development of the Russian-Algerian relations in electric power industry so as to raise them to the level conforming to economic opportunities and potential of the two countries.

In particular, according to the final minutes of the meeting, the parties will continue developing their cooperation in oil and gas industry in Algeria, Russia and other countries. The cooperation will be developed on a mutually beneficial basis within the framework of development and manufacturing projects, establishment of joint ventures, exchange of experience and information in the field of gas industry.

The parties also agreed to continue negotiations to coordinate the draft Intergovernmental agreement in the field of peaceful use of nuclear power between the Government of Algerian People’s Democratic Republic and that of the Russian Federation stipulating international obligations of the both states and to hold the next series of consultations in September, 2010.

The Russian party expressed interest in the projects related to development of the phosphorous deposit in Algeria and construction of a plant producing nitrogen, phosphate and other minerals and claimed its intention to take part in the tenders to be issued in this sphere. The meeting participants also considered the questions of Russian-Algerian cooperation in the field of transportation.

As for personnel training, the parties agreed to make direct contact between universities and other higher education establishments of the both countries in regard to students, postgraduates and teachers exchange.

The fifth meeting of the Commission will be held in Moscow in 2011.
