SC Rosatom’s director general Sergey Kiriyenko termed the fire situation at southwest perimeter of VNIIEF in Sarov as “difficult but controllable.” “There is no any threat to facilities of the federal nuclear center, including environmental and explosion threats,” he emphasized.

Kiriyenko told journalists in Sarov about 3,000 people were involved in fire fighting, including 1,000 of the center’s employees, volunteers and militaries. In addition, the fire-fighting capabilities are reinforced by four helicopters and four airplanes, about 30 fire trucks are approaching the scene along with heavy machinery.
