OREANDA-NEWS. January 18, 2011. Erection of the Curling Center metal frame (capacity 3,000) has been started in the Olympic Park. The builders have already installed three pairs of steel columns whose total weight is about 18 tons. Each pair will form a base for a U-shaped arch. A total of eight arches more than 19 m high will be installed.
Work will be accomplished in two stages spanning five months. The first stage will involve the erection of the building’s load-carrying metal frame. Back in late 2010, he builders carried out preliminary work, installed temporary supports and received metalwork manufactures by Krasnosulinsky Metalwork Plant. The second stage will involve the assembly of metalwork of tribunes and floor structures. The total weight of the Curling Center structures is 1,148 tons.

The Curling Center is a 30 x 60 m four-storey building. The lower level accommodates one rink with four curling sheets. Located along the Center perimeter will be teams’ locker rooms and servicer spaces for athletes, referees, press people and competition organizers. The second floor will accommodate a viewer zone, tribune entrances, VIP box, Presidential Box and the Olympic Family Zone. The vertical link will be provided by four stairways and three elevators.

The Curling Center will be commissioned in 2012 and will host international test competitions in 2013. After the Olympics the Curling Center will be transferred to another Russian region to become a training curling facility.
