OREANDA-NEWS. April 25, 2011. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today announced global production, as well as domestic sales and export figures for March 2011 and for the 2010 fiscal year.

Production: Global and in Japan

Total global production for March 2011 came in at 106,229 units, 10.9 percent down over the same month last year and the first monthly decrease in three months since December 2010. Production volume in Japan at 49,434 units was 25.7 percent down year-on-year, the first year-on-year decrease in 16 months since November 2009. Passenger car output at 43,386 units was 26.5 percent down on the previous fiscal year. Commercial vehicle output at 6,048 units was 19.8 percent down on March 2010. The decline in output in Japan was due to restricted operation of the company's factories after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Sales in Japan

Vehicle sales in Japan in March totaled 20,332 units, 31.4 percent down on the same month last year and the first year-on-year monthly decrease in seven months since September 2010. Sales of passenger cars at 14,922 units were 36.2 percent down year-on-year, while sales of commercial vehicles at 5,410 units were 13.5 percent down over March 2010. Registered vehicle sales volume at 6,732 units was 47.7 percent down on the same month last year. Minicar sales volume at 13,600 units was 18.9 percent down over March 2010.

Production overseas

Overseas production volume totaled 56,795 units, 7.9 percent up over March last year and the third consecutive monthly year-on-year increase since January 2011. By region, output in Asia at 45,834 units was 8.4 percent up on March 2010, boosted chiefly by 33.4 percent, 12.1 percent, and 43.9 percent year-on-year increases at China Motor Corp. in Taiwan, MMTh in Thailand and KRM in Indonesia respectively. Output in China at 11,145 units was 14.0 percent down compared to last March. In North America, output at 4,265 units was 45.9 percent up year-on-year. In Europe, output at 2,128 units was 30.8 percent down over the same period last year. In South America output at 4,380 units was 12.3 percent up on March 2010.

Export shipments from Japan

Total exports from Japan of 45,667 units were 0.8 percent down on March 2010, marking the first monthly year-on-year decrease since November 2009 as shipments of built-up cars to certain regions were affected by the earthquake. Exports to Asia at 7,202 units were 22.0 percent up on the back of higher shipments to China. Shipments to North America at 5,257 units were 1.3 percent down due to decreased production in models for the Canadian market. Exports to Europe overall at 18,559 units were 49.0 percent up, though shipments to some markets in Europe were impacted by the earthquake.
 
2010 Fiscal Year (April 2010 - March 2011)

Production: Global and in Japan

Total global production in fiscal year 2010 came in at 1,185,723 units, 25.8 percent up over fiscal year 2009 and the first increase in annual volume since fiscal year 2007. Production volume in Japan at 663,320 units was 29.2 percent up on fiscal year 2009, the first increase in three years since fiscal year 2007. Passenger car volume at 590,083 units was 34.7 percent up on fiscal year 2009, chiefly on the back of the success of the RVR model. Commercial vehicle volume at 73,237 units was 3.0 percent down in comparison to last fiscal year.

Sales in Japan

Vehicle sales in Japan in fiscal year 2010 totaled 163,470 units, 4.2 percent down over fiscal 2009 and the first decrease in annual total in 2 years since fiscal 2008. Passenger car sales of 120,124 units and commercial vehicle sales of 43,346 units were 6.2 percent down and 1.8 percent up respectively on the last fiscal year. Registered vehicle sales volume at 59,297 units was 9.1 percent down from fiscal year 2009. Minicar sales of 104,173 units were 1.2 percent down in comparison to last year's sales.
Production overseas

Overseas production volume in fiscal year 2010 totaled 522,403 units, 21.7 percent up over last year and the second consecutive annual rise since fiscal year 2009. By region, output in Asia at 422,211 units was 28.7 percent up on fiscal year 2009, buoyed principally by 54.3 percent and 77.8 percent increases at MMTh in Thailand and KRM in Indonesia respectively. Output in China at 116,563 units was up 0.5 percent on fiscal year and was the second highest volume on record. In North America, output at 32,846 units was 44.7 percent up on fiscal year 2009 which had been impacted by a three-month halt in production. In Europe, output at 27,149 units was 30.3 percent down in comparison to fiscal year 2009, due to slower sales in the region. In South America, output at 35,970 units was 1.5 percent up on fiscal year 2009 following a recovery in sales.
Export shipments from Japan

Total exports from Japan in fiscal year 2010 of 472,143 units were 59.9 percent up on the previous fiscal year, the first year-on-year increase in three years since fiscal year 2007. By region, exports to Asia of 60,048 units were 46.8 percent up over fiscal year 2009, driven mainly by increased shipments of built-up cars to China. Exports to North America of 62,000 units were 18.8 percent up on last fiscal year, due principally to stronger sales in the United States. Exports to Europe of 186,722 units were 199.8 percent up in comparison to fiscal year 2009, driven mainly by a major recovery in sales in Russia.
