OREANDA-NEWS. March 26, 2012. Severstal (“Severstal” or the “Company”),  one of the world’s leading vertically integrated steel and steel related mining companies, announces that its Cherepovets Steel Mill, part of the Severstal Russian Steel Division and one of the world's largest standalone integrated steelworks by capacity, is to achieve 200,000 cu m wastewater discharge reduction into bodies of water by 2013.

This will be ensured by closing down two out of the five currently existent effluent discharge outlets.

Andrei Lutsenko, Manufacturing Director and Chief Engineer, Division Severstal Russian Steel commented: “In 2012, Cherepovets Steel Mill is going to allot some RUR 600 million toward implementing water-protective measures and maintaining appropriate facilities in good repair”.

Design documents have already been prepared, equipment purchased and construction work is underway.

A key component of Severstal’s corporate social responsibility policy is a responsible attitude towards the use of natural resources. In October 2011, the company announced that Severstal initiates major project to reduce atmospheric emissions at the Cherepovets Steel Mill. Between 2011 and 2015 investments in environmental projects at the Cherepovets Steel Mill will total approximately 9.3 billion rubles (USD 300 million).

Since the start of 2011, fourteen new environmental projects and initiatives have been introduced across the Severstal Russian Steel division. Of these, half aim to minimize harmful atmospheric emissions with the other half focused on reducing water pollution.
