OREANDA-NEWS. JSC Gelezhinkelio Tiesimo Centras is a subsidiary company of SC Lietuvos Gelezhinkeliai, which was awarded part of the announced public procurement. Under this procurement procedure, tenders were also submitted by the consortium of the Lithuanian companies Kauno Tiltai and Mitnija and the consortium of Kauno Keliai and the Estonian railway building company Skinest Baltija.

The town of Sheshtokai situated near the Polish border is important as a transit point between the Baltic States and the western countries of the European Union; therefore, the reconstruction of the railway station is a significant part of the Rail Baltica project.

The Sheshtokai railway station was built at the end of XIX century. In Sheshtokai, trains are currently running on the route Vilnius-Sheshtokai-Warsaw. There is also a cargo reloading and import/export terminal operating in the Sheshtokai station.

Following the reconstruction, incoming trains using the 1,435 mm European gauge and 1,520 mm Russian standard gauge will be served in this station.

Rail Baltica is one of the priority European railway projects which will link Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas and Warsaw. Two parts of the Rail Baltica project are co-financed under the EU’s TEN-T programme and from the Lithuanian budget within Lithuania: reconstruction and building of the European-gauge track between the Polish–Lithuanian border and Marijampole as well as reconstruction of the existing track between Shiauliai and Lithuanian–Latvian border.
