OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2013. A massive landslide appeared on a copper career Kennecott Utah Copper Bingham Canyon Mine that changed the landscape of this industrial development in southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

The damaged quarry is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the UK. Quotes of Rio Tinto shares were down for 0.5% when the company announced about Bingham Canyon breakdown and news about work stoppage for a few months.

Bingham Canyon Mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world. It has been in production since 1906, and features a pit almost one kilometer deep and 4km wide.

According to the miners who worked there, information about dangerous driving - a few inches a day - wall fragment career came in February, but the measures taken to strengthen it yielded in no results.
