OREANDA-NEWS. June 19, 2013. CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) launched a new educational website which offers full spectrum of information on nuclear energy with a view to facilitating a community - wide discussion on the challenges of fuel mix choices in Hong Kong.

The website aims to furnish the public with a balanced view on nuclear energy based on an understanding of both its benefits and risks.

Featuring an interactive design, the website equips visitors with knowledge on the scientific aspects of nuclear power generation and advancements in the industry. Beyond the technical aspect the website discusses such controversial issues as nuclear safety and the major nuclear accidents in history including the one that took place in Fukushima Japan in 2011. Taking the issue close to home is a section dedicated to introduce the safety regime at the Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station in Shenzhen and the HKSAR Government’s corresponding contingency plan.

Chan Siu - hung, CLP Holdings Managing Director – Nuclear, said “Nuclear power is a clean and reliable energy source that has been meeting a quarter of Hong Kong’s electricity need for almost 20 years. Going forward, in support of the city’s economic development, nuclear can continue to play a paramount role as part of a diversified fuel mix that ensures electricity reliability.

However grave concerns remain over safety issues especially after the Fukushima accident . CLP has therefore been working to enhance public literacy on nuclear energy because it is only through a comprehensive understanding of different fuel choices that Hong Kong can make an informed decision on its future energy policy.”

Following the launch of a Nuclear Resources Centre last year, the nuclear energy website extends CLP’s public education effort to online communication.

The website features six theme – based sections, namely “Energy & Environment”, “Nuclear Science & Radiation”, “Nuclear Power Generation”, “Risks & Concerns”, “Nuclear Safety” and “Industry & Regulations”. In addition, an “Education Resources” corner 2 is included to make all the essential information about nuclear energy readily available for visitors.
