OREANDA-NEWS. BP Group Chief Economist—Dr. Christof Rьhl mentioned “China” five times when talking about renewable energy in Shanghai seminar of “2013 BP Statistical Review of World Energy”. China has become the world's second-largest renewable energy generation country, only behind the United States.

The world energy market is constantly adjusted and the sources of energy supply are becoming more and more diverse. Released by the Review, in 2012, the renewable energy accounted for 4.7% of the total global power generation, the highest in history. Hydropower and wind power both grew rapidly and the former accounted for 6.7% of the global energy consumption, creating a new record. China's hydropower occupied half of the world’s total. The 4.3% global hydropower growth rate in 2012 exceeded the average and all the net increase came from China.

Based on the hydropower expansion plan, in the last decade, China’s hydropower generation reached more than half of the global incremental amount and in 2012 it hit the largest annual increment of 23% since the Review’s record. In addition, wind power rose unexpectedly. In 2012, wind power accounted for more than half of the incremental global renewable energy generation and the largest increase came from China. Thus China has become the main force of leading the development of renewable energy.
