OREANDA-NEWS. Power Machines OJSC manufactured and tested a high-speed steam turbine with capacity of 1200 MW. This is the last of the four Power Machines’ turbines to be installed at nuclear power plant of the NPP-2006 project, which are being constructed in Russia. The turbine is destined for the second power unit of Leningradskaya NPP-2.

Power Machines OJSC and Atomenergoprom OJSC signed contracts to supply complete sets of main turbine hall equipment for fitting out of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 and Leningradskaya NPP-2 in May 2008. Two power units with VVER-type reactors (each having an electric capacity of 1200 MW) will be built at each of the nuclear plants.

According to the contract terms, Power Machinesare to provide design, manufacturing and supply of four complete sets of steam turbines, condensers and separate auxiliary equipment for turbine plant systems, as well as four complete sets of turbine generators comprising auxiliary systems equipment, an excitation system and an exciter to Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 and Leningradskaya NPP-2.

In December 2010, a prototype of the turbine, destined for the first power unit of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2, was manufactured and delivered to the customer; in September 2011, a turbine for the first power unit of Leningradskaya NPP-2 was manufactured; and in November 2012, turbine for the second power unit of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 was manufactured. So far, four turbine generators have also been manufactured under this contract.

High-speed 1200 MW turbines for nuclear power plants are latest developments of Power Machines designed for new-generation power units and featuring improved reliability and safety. Currently, 1200 MW turbines are the world’s most powerful high-speed steam turbines. Cutting-edge engineering solutions and technologies, as well as expertise gained during production of turbines for Kudankulam NPP (India) and operation of turbines at Tianwan NPP (China) and Kalininskay NPP were used in design and production of these turbines.

Design solutions, which enhance the turbine efficiency, include application of a strengthened 1200 mm low pressure cylinder last stage working blade for increased steam flow. At present, these are the blades of the maximum length, which are series-produced of titanium alloy and used worldwide in high-speed steam turbines. Use of solid-forged high pressure and low pressure rotors with coupling flanges, as well as implementation of a set of active and passive measures for protecting turbine parts of erosion, enhance the equipment’s reliability. Furthermore, a number of technological solutions ensure high maintainability of the turbine.
For more than 30 years, enterprises within Power Machineshave been designing and manufacturing high-tech equipment for nuclear power plants. Today, high-speed 1000 MW turbines, produced by the Company, are operated at NPP power units in Russia, Ukraine, China, Iran and India. Prototypes of high-speed turbines and generators with capacity of 1200 MW are being installed at new power units of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 and Leningradskaya NPP-2. Activities on manufacturing of basic generating equipment for fitting out of the two power units of Belarusian NPP are underway.
