OREANDA-NEWS. December 02, 2013. President Toomas Hendrik Ilves gave a presentation entitled "The Role of Information and Communications Technology in Promoting Business and Innovation" at the Legatum Institute in London.

President Ilves presented the e-solutions in the public and private sector in Estonia, X-Road and the ID-card system. He stressed that as of today almost 100 per cent of the population use Estonian e-government services, the majority of bank transactions are made online, 25 per cent of votes are cast online, 97 per cent of tax returns are submitted electronically and medication is bought from pharmacies using digital prescriptions. Estonians have given more than 140 million digital signatures.

President Ilves outlined the co-operation between Estonia and Finland in using a common data exchange layer, and he expressed hope that it would be an example to the whole of Europe, in that more and more countries would begin to offer cross-border services in the future.

The presentation of the Head of State was introduced by Pulitzer Prize winning historian and writer Anne Applebaum. The presentation of President Ilves was attended by nearly a hundred leaders of various fields, including academics, politicians, journalists, diplomats, businessmen and representatives of civil society.
