OREANDA-NEWS.    Nordecon AS and the Estonian Road Administration entered into a contract today for the performance of design and construction work on construction section 5 of the western part of the Tartu bypass. The work comprises the renovation of the road section leading to the airport intersection and the construction of four overpasses and one tunnel. The construction work will cost 8.6 million euros (before VAT).

'Nordecon is very pleased to carry on with the next stage of construction of the Tartu bypass. We finished the construction work on the new central post office traffic junction last autumn and now the project – one of the biggest transport junctions in Southern Estonia – must also be renovated and modernised for the section leading to the airport,' said Avo Ambur, Member of the Board of Nordecon AS. 'Construction section 5 of the bypass is an essential road section that is used by more than 14,000 drivers per day, from local road users to transit traffic.'

According to Mr Ambur, the Torvandi intersection included in the construction section will become a grade-separated intersection, resulting in directing the flow of vehicle traffic and pedestrian and bicycle traffic between the small towns of Torvandi and Ьlenurme below the main highway and the railway track.

On the 3-kilometre section from Lemmatsi Road to Lennuvalja Road on the Tallinn-Tartu-Voru-Luhamaa highway, a highway section with 2+2 lanes conforming to the requirements of a Class I Road will be designed and constructed along with the respective utility networks. Three highway overpasses, a railway overpass and a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel will be constructed on the construction section; the road structure of the crossing connecting roads and secondary roads will be renovated, and the Tamme Street connecting road and the Lennuvalja road section along with a new roundabout will be constructed.

Additional dust-free road surface will be ensured for local side roads to the extent of approximately 7 km.

The total length of the western part of the Tartu bypass is 12 km and it comprises the stretch of the Tallinn-Tartu-Voru-Luhamaa highway between Kandikula and Uhti. Construction of the bypass has been divided into six construction sections. The aim of the reconstruction is to construct the entire western part of the Tartu bypass to become a four-lane Class I Road.

The work on construction section 5 of the western part of the Tartu bypass by Nordecon will commence in autumn 2014 and the planned duration of the work is 15 months.
