OREANDA-NEWS. September 30, 2015. The cell stack is a charge/discharge portion, which acts as the core of a redox flow cell. Our redox flow cell stack, confirmed its high safety and durability, was awarded UL Product Certification.*1

A high capacity storage cell has a large-scale system, which accordingly makes it more difficult to ensure its safety and durability. We have conquered such difficulties associated with large-sized systems, gaining a product safety certification, the UL Product Certification, for our redox flow cell stack.

Over these past few years, the percentage of renewable energy usage has increased worldwide owing to solar power generation, wind power generation, etc. In the United States, the State of California has set a target of renewable energies up to 50% in its energy portfolio by 2030. Because of concerns that an increase in renewable energies will cause instability across power grids,*2 the introduction of high capacity storage cells is being studied and planned as one possible solution.

The acquisition of the certification not only provides us a foothold for expanding business to the North American market but should also appeal the safety of redox flow cells in markets worldwide and lead to increased sales.

*1 Certification based on the product safety standards developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL, Northbrook, Illinois, USA) that aims to eliminate fire, electric shock and other risks from products. Many electric products sold in North America acquire the widely known UL Product Certification as proof of their safety.

*2 The output of renewable energies like solar and wind power greatly fluctuates because the sources are readily affected by the weather. Increased fluctuation on power grids makes it hard to keep voltage and frequency stable.
