OREANDA-NEWS. Gazprom Neft has started using “ray trace” modelling technology in its seismic surveys. The outcomes of initial testing at the Novoportovskoye field have led to the decision being taken to implement the technology throughout all fields operated by Gazprom Neft. Ray trace modelling involves the use of specialist software which, on the basis of regional geology and previous seismic surveys, calculates the optimum layout of elastic-wave transmitting and receiving equipment.

The use of ray trace modelling improves the accuracy of geological modelling, allowing the more effective planning of proposed field development. On this basis, optimised methodology in field development can reduce seismic costs by as much as 30 percent.

Vadim Yakovlev, First Deputy CEO, Gazprom Neft, commented: “Introducing new technologies means we can continually improve the process of field development, starting with geological prospecting and exploration. The geological model of a field is the basis on which plans for its further development are made, so we pay close attention to opportunities to improve accuracy in forecasting. Gazprom Neft is constantly looking at new technologies in order to identify the most effective of these and begin their dissemination across all of the company’s assets.”
