OREANDA-NEWS. In Russia, there may be a tax on meat to curb climate change. This opinion was expressed by Dmitry Peskov, special representative of the President of Russia for digital and technological development, reports TASS.

Carbon footprint policies can affect livestock production as well. “In a few years, we will at first be loudly indignant, and then we will be forced, for example, to adopt a tax on meat,” Peskov admitted.

He added that the climate agenda can change the livestock sector and become an incentive for the development of new technologies in this area. The idea to tax meat was previously suggested by Beyond Meat. Such a measure will force people to reduce its consumption, the founder of the company, Ethan Brown, is sure.

He considers it necessary to impose a "pigouvian tax" on meat of animal origin - such payments are levied on enterprises whose work leads to negative side effects for society. According to the head of Beyond Meat, such a measure would help developing countries invest in the production of plant-based sources of protein.

Earlier it was reported that for the export of beef to China, Russia overtook Australia, Argentina and Brazil, filling the largest market in the world with this product.
