OREANDA-NEWS. June 24, 2016. WhatsApp, one of the world's most popular messaging apps, reached a big milestone today. It can now boast that 100 million voice calls are made through its app everyday. That ends up being about 1,100 calls a second.

Due to its ability to provide end-to-end encryption, the app is popular among users concerned with privacy and security. Its encryption abilities often land it in hot water from government agencies as well.

In March, WhatsApp came under fire from the US Department of Justice when it did not unscramble a series of messages for an investigation. Later in May, the country of Brazil attempted to suspend the app for 48 hours (but efforts were quickly overturned), citing the company's failure to cooperate with another criminal case.

The social networking site Facebook acquired Whatsapp in 2014. The service reached one billion users earlier this year in February.
