OREANDA-NEWS. Lattelecom, in cooperation with Nokia and Huawei, has successfully completed initial tests using G.fast data transmission technology that is currently new to the telecommunication industry. The first results are impressive – it was possible to achieve a data transmission speed of 780 Mbit/s using the existing copper cable network.

Lattelecom is the first company to conduct such tests in Latvia. In the test laboratories the existing network elements and different copper cables were tested successfully, which indicates that it will be possible to create high-speed Internet connection services in the near future that will actually equal the speed of the optical network.

"Currently G.fast is one of the most discussed technologies in our industry. The most exciting fact is that around the world, and now also in Latvia, opportunities are being researched in terms of how to use infrastructure that was built a long time ago and that could be used for modern purposes. The possible data exchange speed via copper cables, using this technology, can reach up to 1 Gbit/s. This is an impressive speed. It is significantly higher compared to other technological standards that are currently available via the copper network," said Uldis Tatar?uks, Chief Technology Officer of Lattelecom.

Tests at the Lattelecom laboratory have shown Internet speeds in excess of 780 Mbit/s. The technology is now subject to its second stage of testing. Active cooperation with equipment producers has been commenced in order to improve different service parameters and the length of cables available for data transmission, as well as solve other technical challenges.

According to Mr U. Tatar?uks, considering that G.fast technology is comparatively new, it is too early to specify a date for implementation, as equipment suppliers are actively working on solutions for second generation devices. Considering the high level of interest among clients in this solution, we predict that we might be able to connect the first client this year.

"We are sure that this technology, as well as other improvements that are continuously introduced in our network, will allow us to ensure the highest possible service quality and retain Latvia’s leading position in the world in terms of Internet speed," summarised Mr U. Tatar?uks.
