OREANDA-NEWS. September 08, 2016. Exelon Generation’s Limerick Generating Station will contribute \\$183,885 to projects that mitigate storm water runoff, acid mine drainage and agricultural pollutants in the Schuylkill River as part of the station’s program to preserve the river and open space around it. The grant to the 2016 Schuylkill River Restoration Fund brings Limerick’s total contributions to Schuylkill River preservation to more than \\$2 million since 2005.

The Schuylkill River Restoration Fund is administered by the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. The fund provides grants to local government and non-profit organizations for projects that improve the quality of water in the watershed. This year, contributions by Limerick Generating Station, the Philadelphia Water Department, Aqua PA and MOM’s Organic Market totaled \\$278,832.

“Protecting and preserving the Schuylkill River is very important to us,” said Rick Libra, Limerick site vice president. “We demonstrate our environmental commitment in our daily operations at the plant and through community partnerships such as this one that provides financial support to innovative environmental programs. We are proud of this unique partnership and honor the 2016 recipients for their efforts to improve the quality of the Schuylkill River.”

Grant recipients were carefully selected by an advisory committee consisting of: Exelon Generation, Delaware River Basin Commission, Philadelphia Water Department, Environmental Protection Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, Schuylkill River Heritage Area, Aqua PA, and the Schuylkill Action Network.

“Over the past 11 years, the Schuylkill River Restoration Fund has distributed \\$2.7 million—and leveraged another \\$4.7 million—for 82 projects that improve water quality in the Schuylkill River watershed,” said Schuylkill River Heritage Area Executive Director Silas Chamberlin.  “The success of this fund demonstrates how non-profit, government, and private sectors can work together to protect and restore the Schuylkill River, which is a source of drinking water for 1.5 million people.”

Limerick Generating Station is located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The plant produces enough carbon-free electricity to power approximately two million homes.  Join us on Twitter and YouTube.
