OREANDA-NEWS.  On 17 April, 2017, ROSATOM held a workshop in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) on Non-energy applications of nuclear technologies, social benefits and development in Latin America. The workshop was organized by Rosatom International Network, through its Regional office Rosatom America Latina.

Led by ROSATOM's representatives, the discussions were focused on the development of irradiation technologies in Latin America and their use in industry, healthcare and agriculture participants. The workshop brought together the representatives of nuclear industry leaders in Brazil such as Electronuclear, Eletrobras, Nuclep, Amazul, Tecnatom etc. as well as state and public organizations: The Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities (ABDAN), the Brazilian Institute for Nuclear Quality (IBQN), Brazilian Society of Nuclear Medicine (SBMN) and the Brazilian Federation of Hospitals (FBH). It attracted also Brazilian students from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). 

For such expert audience, the Vice-President of the regional office Rosatom Am?rica Latina Sergey Krivolapov made the welcome speech and first presentation of the day, introducing besides Rosatom's unique capabilities and integrated offer, updates on the company's cooperation throughout the region. He noted that the event took place within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the United Innovations Corporation (UIC) and the Brazilian company CK3, in the end of 2016, on the construction of an Irradiation Center in Brazil. "This Center is another very interesting project for us, since it will allow combining Russian competences and achievements in the radiation technology field with the experience of the Brazilian company CK3 in the domestic market."

The leading enterprises of ROSATOM shared their extensive experience in the sphere of irradiation technologies with their Latin American colleagues. ROSATOM`s subsidiary Rusatom Healthcare, which specializes in promoting Russian nuclear technologies in medicine, and the Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics and Automation (JSC “NIITFA”), presented the wide range of products offered by ROSATOM in this area. In particular, Mr. Konstantin Panin, representative of Rusatom Healthcare, highlighted the construction of multi-functional facilities for radiation processing of food and medical products, from which the countries can experience economic benefits and improvement of the population's health. Furthermore, Mr. Aleksandr Zykin, Head of Laboratory of JSC “NIIFTA”, presenting its areas of competences in an extroverted way, for the better understanding, stressed, “For all task under the laws of physics there is an engineering solution available waiting to be set. That is what we do already for more than 60 years.”    

From Brazilian side, CK3’s Advisor, Mr. Arminak Cherkezian, provided an overview of the case of the joint project "ROSATOM-CK3" for the development of irradiation plant for sterilization of medical materials. In his speech, he presented the perspectives of this venture, which aims to be a quality and viable option for the market that today relies only on one supplier. He also thanked ROSATOM for organizing such workshop, capable of promoting a representative debate on the theme, in a Latin American level, bringing together one of the main players of the region. “After today’s workshop, I’m even more convinced of the necessity of this plant. This project is going to be a great remark of Rosatom in Brazil.”
