OREANDA-NEWS. The construction of the world's first experimental demonstration power unit with a fast neutron nuclear reactor and lead coolant BREST-OD-300 in the Tomsk Region will begin this fall. This was reported by the official publication of the Russian nuclear industry, the Strana Rosatom newspaper.

This power unit is necessary for the development of technologies for the nuclear energy of the future. In February of this year, Rostekhnadzor issued a license for the construction of the BREST-OD-300 power unit to the enterprise of the state corporation Rosatom Siberian Chemical Combine (Siberian Chemical Combine, Seversk, Tomsk Region, Russia).

Earlier, the media reported that the Russian government will seek global recognition of atomic energy as carbon-free and meeting climate goals. Such an initiative was put forward in March by Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko in a report to Vladimir Putin on the promotion of Russian interests in the field of climate on the international arena in 2021.

For Russia, the recognition of the carbon-free nature of nuclear energy opens up opportunities both in terms of achieving national goals and in terms of export potential, Izvestia reports. They advocate that each country can independently choose the best means of achieving climate goals. At the same time, the department admitted that approaches common to the whole world could be developed to coordinate actions.
