OREANDA-NEWS. SSE’s Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station in Warrington recently welcomed 40 students from Imperial College London.

The students, who are all studying for an MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures, visited a number of power stations across the country during their week long field trip.

The course, which aims to develop the next generation of leaders in the energy sector, provides a grounding in the major features of global energy issues, sustainable energy technologies, and their interactions with economics, the environment and policy.

The students listened to a number of presentations, including information on air abatement systems which reduce Nitrogen Oxides and remove Sulphur Dioxide in the flue gas before it is released into the atmosphere, reducing the stations impact on the environment. The presentations were led by various Fiddler’s Ferry employees, including Patrick Neill (Environment Manager), Joel Barnes (FGD enhanced technician) and Steve Scott (Chemist).

After the presentations, the students enjoyed a 3 hour tour of the site where they had the opportunity to visit the coal plant, hopper house, main control room and cooling towers.

Patrick Neill, who led the visit, said: “It was great to have Imperial College London visit us at Fiddler’s Ferry this year as part of their studies. This is the eighth time students on this course have come to have a tour of the station, and get the opportunity to listen to presentations and ask questions. We find the students always have lots of interesting and thought provoking questions for us.”
