OREANDA-NEWS. Georg Graf Waldersee, recently appointed special representative of the German government for gas transit through Ukraine, held the first talks in Russia. On Wednesday, September 8, Valderze met with Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak.

«During the working meeting, the possibility of using the Ukrainian transit route after 2024 was discussed. The parties agreed to continue the relevant consultations», the Russian government said in a statement.

Germany has repeatedly stated the need to maintain gas transit through Ukraine even after 2024, when the current transit agreement ends. This point became part of the agreements reached in July between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Joe Biden. In exchange for Washington's rejection of new sanctions against the «Nord Stream-2» project, Berlin, among other things, pledged to extend the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after 2024.

Earlier it was reported that gas supplies via the «Nord Stream-2» are expected from October 1. This is reported by the Bloomberg agency, citing it's sources. It is noted that such terms were announced by Gazprom.
