OREANDA-NEWS. Denmark will completely stop oil and gas production and exploration in the North Sea by 2050, all tenders and licensing of such activities are canceled. Such an agreement was reached on December 3 by the government and parliament of the country. The decision to cease oil and gas production cancels the planned eighth round of licensing and all future tenders, Reuters agency reported.

Copenhagen ends the fossil era, Danish Minister of Climate and Energy and Public Utilities, Dan Jorgensen, said.

In 2019, the Danish authorities adopted a project to reduce emissions of pollutants by 70 % by 2030 in order to become a climate neutral country by 2050.

Denmark is the largest producer of oil and gas in the European Union, bypassed by the non-bloc Norway and the outgoing Great Britain.
