OREANDA-NEWSThe European Commission (EC) will not appeal the decision of the European Court of Justice to limit Gazprom’s use of OPAL gas pipeline capacity. The representative of the EC Anna-Kaisa Itkonen informed the Russian media about this on Thursday. “Indeed, I can confirm that this is true”, she said, answering the question whether the EC can confirm the relevant information that appeared in the media.

In early September, the European Court of Justice in a Polish lawsuit annulled the decision of the European Commission of 2016, according to which Gazprom could use OPAL capacities to 100%, 36 billion cubic meters per year. Now the Russian holding can use only 50% of the pipeline’s capacity. Following this decision, Gazprom cut OPAL supplies and began increasing gas transit to Europe through Ukraine.

OPAL is a branch pipe connecting Nord Stream with the gas transmission system of Central and Western Europe. Gas enters Germany to the border with the Czech Republic.
