OREANDA-NEWS. Klaus Ernst, head of the Bundestag Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy, urged Washington to abandon tougher sanctions on the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 and warned that US sanctions policy is undermining the transatlantic partnership.

Ernst sent a letter to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, the heads of several committees and authors of the bill proposing to increase pressure on the construction of the gas pipeline. The draft law was submitted to the US Senate in the beginning of June.

The German politician noted that the extraterritorial application of sanctions undermines the image of the United States and its economy in the European Union. He rejected allegations that the use of Nord Stream 2 would lead Germany to dependence on Russia, calling them unfounded.
