OREANDA-NEWS. The United States Congress may adopt a new package of sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if Russia tries to build the remaining sections of the object. This was written by the German newspaper Handelsblatt with reference to diplomatic sources in Washington.

According to the publication, such restrictions can be imposed in February or March. They will be directed against European investors of Nord Stream 2 or companies which intend to receive gas from the pipeline. The interlocutor of journalists stated that both the House of Representatives and the Senate are ready to adopt a new sanction law.

According to Handelsblatt, German companies are concerned with possibility of imposing new measures against the project. “We know that the Americans are determined to stop Nord Stream 2,” the representative of Uniper noted, emphasizing that the company “is very closely monitoring the situation.”

At the same time, the newspaper writes that the German government still counts for the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project “within a reasonable time”, although it does not intend to provide technical assistance to complete its construction.
