OREANDA-NEWS. The opposition in Germany has called on the government to tighten it's policy towards Russia because of the Kremlin's suppression of demonstrations in support of the well-known opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

«Metro lines are being stopped, city blocks are being cordoned off, train stations are being closed, thousands of police officers are being deployed — the overly nervous reaction of the Russian leadership to the protests in support of Navalny shows, that President Putin fears for his power», Alexander Lambsdorff said, deputy chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) faction in the Bundestag, in an interview with the «Rheinische Post» newspaper, published on Monday, February 1.

According to Lambsdorf, Germany and European partners should urgently seek the release of Alexei Navalny. «At the same time, the federal government should strive to ensure, that before the elections, members of all democratic parties in Russia can finally re-organize and work without fear for their own lives and safety», the deputy chairman of the FDP faction said.

The deputy chairman of the «Union-90/Greens» faction in the Bundestag, Agnieszka Brugger, demanded consequences for the German-Russian project for the construction of the new «Nord Stream-2» gas pipeline. Brugger said, that in her opinion «Nord Stream-2» is not only a blow to climate protection and an insult to our European partners, but also a project, that should have been stopped long ago because of the violations of human rights and Germany's security interests.
