OREANDA-NEWS. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called on the House of Representatives and the Senate of the US Congress to use all legal tools to irreversibly stop the construction of the gas pipeline within the framework of the Nord Stream 2 project by applying sanctions against all participants in this project, including Nord Stream AG. Such a statement at a meeting of the Ukrainian parliament on Friday was supported by 292 parliamentarians with the required minimum of 226 votes.

The United States on Thursday said it had abandoned the imposition of sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG, which is implementing the Nord Stream 2 Russian gas pipeline project, explaining that it is in their national interests. Thus, one of the obstacles to the completion of the pipeline has been removed, although Washington still claims that it is strongly opposed to the project.

The Rada's statement says that the Nord Stream 2 project is an attempt by the Russian Federation to use energy as "an instrument of hybrid war, which directly threatens the energy security of both Ukraine and Europe." The statement also notes that the Rada highly appreciates the categorical position of the United States against the completion of the construction of Nord Stream 2, at the same time it is deeply concerned that additional sanctions do not include measures against the key company of the Nord Stream 2 participant, Nord Stream AG.

The statement reads: "The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine calls on the House of Representatives and the Senate of the United States Congress to use all the available tools provided for by American legislation to completely and irreversibly stop the construction of a gas pipeline within the framework of the Nord Stream 2 project by applying blocking sanctions against all participants in this Russian geopolitical project, including Nord Stream AG ".
