OREANDA-NEWSThe U.S. Department of Energy is proposing to restrict or ban imports of Russian uranium for reasons of national security. This is stated in a report released on Thursday by the department.

"The United States has lost the competitive advantage of a global leader in nuclear energy among global state-owned companies. Russia and China, along with other states, are actively trying to surpass our country", the document says. In this regard, the department recommends the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to ban the import of nuclear fuel produced by the Russian Federation and China.

An agreement to suspend an anti-dumping investigation regarding uranium supplies from the Russian Federation was signed in 1992, and a number of amendments to it were signed in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2008. The existing regime for the supply of Russian uranium products to the American market is limited by certain quotas.
