OREANDA-NEWS. Washington’s imposition of sanctions on companies participating in the laying of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline could delay its commissioning for more than a year. This statement was made on Wednesday by US Senator Ted Cruz (a Republican from Texas).

He noted that there are two options for introducing appropriate restrictive measures. The first involves the adoption by the US Congress of the relevant bill, and the second - the use by the American administration of the authority to impose the restrictions provided for by the CAATSA Act already in force in the USA ("On Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions").

Cruz is one of the authors of the bill on relevant restrictions. In July, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee supported this legislative initiative. Since then, he has been awaiting approval by the full composition of the upper house of Congress. For entry into force, a similar bill must be adopted by the House of Representatives, and then signed by the president of the country.
